One of the most basic skills in a marriage is the ability to tell the straight, unvarnished truth about what your spouse has done – and then, completely, unself-righteously, and joyously express forgiveness without a shred of superiority, without making the other person feel small.

My dad tried to get across to me in grade school that I should never try to be better than someone else. Now if you just stop there, it is kind of crazy advice. But he didn't stop there. He said to learn from others and never cease trying to be the best that you can be. That is under your control: the other isn't. So don't worry about being better, worry about being the best you can be. Part of being your best is accepting your own mistakes and learning from them. But do not be afraid to fail.

You who truly love God have received His peace and forgiveness, so your guilt has been relieved. And what a relief it is! You don't spend your days wallowing around in how wrong or how badly you feel. You have claimed His mercy. You're free of guilt. You're free to respond in unrestrained praise! (See Psalm 103:8-12)
